Visit Red Rock Canyon While in Las Vegas

One thing that continues to amaze me is that how many visitors come to Las Vegas and never leave The Strip.  I can understand this if it is your first visit to Las Vegas. Your time is limited and you may not have rented a car. But for anyone that has visited Las Vegas more than once, you have no excuse!

Get your butt out of the casino and visit Red Rock Canyon!  It is one of the most scenic parks you can visit in the United States. Red rock formations, sandstone cliffs, Indian pictographs, horseback riding, hiking, biking and the ultimate discovery zone for kids is only minutes from your hotel room. A trip here will make you feel as if you took two vacations. It's completely different than the hustle and bustle, city life on The Strip or in Downtown Las Vegas. Red Rock Canyon, Spring Mountain Ranch State Park and Bonnie Springs are a breath of fresh air and a well deserved break that will allow you to catch your breath and wind down from your gambling high.

The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area has a 13 mile scenic drive loop that will cost you $5.00 per car (may go up to $7.00).  You must do this! Compare this small entry fee to your expensive glass of wine on The Strip and then tell me which was more worth the money...  Anyhow, once through the gate, visit the gift shop first. You will find trail maps and informative park rangers willing to answer all your questions about the Red Rock canyon area and its history.

This scenic road trip won't take much time out of your day either. It's literally right next door and you can spend as little as one hour on a quick drive through or you can put in a full day if you decide to do some hiking and horseback riding. Rock climbing is also available in the Calico Basin area as well as in parts of Red Rock Canyon (permits are needed).

You can get to Red Rock Canyon two ways.

  1. Take Charleston Blvd. (Rt 159) west, it takes you directly into the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
  2. Take Las Vegas Blvd South to Blue Diamond Rd. (RT 160), head west until you come to Rt. 159 and head into the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

TRAVEL SMART!

  • Take water bottles and a couple snacks with you
  • DON'T LITTER! Take your garbage home or use trash cans

Enjoy!

1/2 Day Ghost Town Trip

Looking for something fun to do while in Las Vegas?  How about a visit to a ghost town? You will need a rental car for this but it's worth it. Don't forget your camera either!

Take the 95 south, then head east on Rt 163 to Laughlin, NV. The scenic drive begins on 163 and you will be treated to an amazing view heading into Laughlin and Bullhead City area.  Cross over into Bullhead City, Arizona and continue south on Arizona 95. You will eventually come to County Hwy 10, aka, the Oatman -Topock Highway, aka, old Rt. 66. Head east approximately 13 miles and you will reach the old mining town of Oatman, AZ.

You are sure to be greeted by burrows that freely roam the streets and surrounding areas. You may also get involved in an old-fashioned gun fight right in the middle of downtown Oatman.  Take pictures, grab a souvenir and stop in the local saloon for some grub before you get back on the road.

Once you leave, continue heading east on Oatman Rd, (Historic U.S. Rt 66) and you will see some of the most beautiful scenery and views Arizona has to offer. Pay attention as this road has sharp curves and rides the edge of some cliffs. One lapse of attention will ruin your day!  You will eventually run into Interstate 40. Follow it to Kingman, AZ and then follow 93 back to Las Vegas. You will cross the Hoover Dam and into Las Vegas.

Depending on how much you like to look around and how many stops you make to take pictures and whatnot, this trip will anywhere from a minimum of 5 hours up to 8 hours or more if you're a real sightseer.

Other notes about this trip:

  1. There is a small museum in Searchlight, NV
  2. The London Bridge is in Laughlin, NV as well as casinos and entertainment.
  3. Bullhead City has shopping and restaurants
  4. Oatman, the main destination of this trip, offers gift shops and photo ops
  5. Old Rt. 66 from Oatman to Interstate 40 is a very scenic drive novice and professional photographers will love
  6. Kingman, AZ may be a nice place to rest and fuel up before your trip back to Nevada
  7. You might as well stop at the Hoover Dam on your way back. More photos... Check your dam camera battery and take the dam tour. Why not! You're already there.

TRAVEL SMART!

  • Take water bottles and a couple snacks with you
  • DON'T LITTER!  Take your garbage home or use trash cans
